Aerobic treatment is necessary in the following 2 cases:

1. In the case of lightly contaminated industrial water (COD ≤ 2500 mg/l), as the main step
2. For highly polluted industrial waters, as a second step after anaerobic treatment. When discharge requirements are high (COD ≤ 125 mg/l), as for a river for example.
